Waking up early enough to see the sun rise is the photographer's proof that the early bird gets the worm – and a bonus is that glorious only-person-on-earth feeling you'll get from the morning solitude. So set your alarm clock and read these tips from pro photographer John Henley. 1. Arrive early: Get there while it's still dark so that you can have your tripod set up just as the sunlight starts to break over the horizon. 2. Study the weather: Ground fog often occurs in late summer and early fall on windless mornings when the temperature and the dew point are nearly the same. 4. Play with color temperature: Try setting the white balance to "shade," which should warm up the scene. 5. Stick to manual exposure: Manual exposure tends to yield the best results, as auto exposure renders the scene as if it were midday.
